Tribute to my uncle and godfather Martin Angel Zani (1923-2016). I consider Martin as my second father. Martin's parents came from Bergamo, Italy —a Germanic Region of Northern Italy, near the Austrian border (the name of this city derived from Bergheim: the house on the mountain)— they emigrated to France. He was born in Gagny, a Western suburb of Paris.
He was 17 when France was invaded by the German army. He fled to Saint Martin on the Isle of Ré in Brittany to avoid a forced integration in the Austrian units of the 3rd Reich. In 1943, he rallied the Army of Free France and was incorporated in a Tank Destroyer Division.
